Curiously, unlike Nintendo, Sega has given the "okay" to fan-made games - provided no money exchanges hands. Of course, not every company looks kindly on fans who choose to express their love in the form of games. They can also create entirely unique stories or combat mechanics as is the case with Undertale fan games. A few of the games on this were made with the blessing of Sega, and are considered, by many, to be “must play” games in the series.
The Sonic the Hedgehog series has one of the most active fan game communities in gaming. The bulk of these fan-made games are a bit rough around the edges (to be nice), but there are also several examples that rival, and sometimes surpass, the original games.
